This is an interesting question.

I don't think a gift is necessary. Of course, this depends on how well you know the family.

If the family is observing the anniversary of the death, a card saying you are thinking of them is fine. You can also donate to a favorite charity in the name of the deceased.

Letting the family know you are thinking of them and praying for them is usually just fine.

you may call the other person but some people at one year are really just trying to make it though that day and dont want to be reminded . i would not do or say anything except call not mention the death but say how are you doing.
dont be surprised if they have forgotten what day it is . i did that the first year after my mom died then in the evening i remembered and was very upset so you know what dont do anything but pray for them.

There is no gift giving on a one year anniversary of death.
If you really want to show your sympathy, you may make a donation to some organization IE., Cancer Society or Heart or to the Children's . . .
Send a card to the family and let them know you made a donation to the cause their loved one suffered from. Express your sympathy and remembrance.

I know of no etiquette about giving death gifts--and who do you want to give it to. A remembance ceremony is sufficient I think. But this is just my beliefs.

Not a gift, perhaps a donation to their favourite charity, or a card to the family.

This greatly depends on their customs.

An engraved picture frame or ornament with the person's name on it and maybe some inspirational words.
