My boyfriend and I have to travel out of state for a wedding and leave our new puppy and older dog for the weekend. We are going to ask a friend to house sit/ dog sit for the weekend and just stay over for the few days we are gone. How much would you pay for someone to do this? $100? more? or less?

The puppy will be 5 months old (chocolate lab) and we have a 4 yr old yellow lab

well, it's not like babysitting kids, where you have to prepare the meal and bath them, put them to bed and all....If that person is staying in your house and eating your food(make sure you have the food he would need to feed himself) 100$ would be more than enough.

It's not like that person will be chained to the house. They can come and go as they please as long as the dogs have their food and water.

I've found that $30 to $40 a day for 2 dogs is about right. I mean, they have to drive to your house 3 or 4 times a day to let your dogs out. With gas prices the way they are, there's no way they can do it for less, especially if you live in a large city.
You could get a friend to do it for that much. If I had a friend in the same situation, I'd probably do it for free.
Have you ever thought about asking a neighbor kid? $100 is a LOT of money to them, you'd have to know that they'd be responsible though, that's the only issue there.

Just a suggestion: it may be more cost-efficient to board your dogs for a few days. Depending on where you live, many cities have several boarding facilities that charge around $15 - $20 per night per dog. I live in Austin, TX and we have several small boarding businesses that let the dogs play inside or outside all day, and the dogs are only crated at night. You'll just need to bring food and beds.

The reason I suggest boarding rather than having a friend looking in on the dogs is that your puppy is only 5 months old. The pup could wig out when his/her humans are gone, and you could come home to find your couch in shreds, your curtains ripped, and your plants up-ended! The little one may need more supervision.

Again - just a thought. Have a good trip! :-)

I have a gal lined up for this summer. Her rates are flexible. One person I know pays her $20 a day for two dogs. Another couple pays her $50 a day for two dogs. We've agreed on $30-35 a day for three dogs.
