I just finished answering a question by a Muslim gentleman who supported the Theory of Evolution. He was concerned about people "calling" him an Atheist. Many of the answerers related to his story, and most balked and treated the term as an insult. In all likelihood I think it was probably meant as an insult, so it isn't to them I direct my bafflement (as it would irritate me to be called a Christian, though I don't rag on people who are) but to the people that are using the designator "Atheist" as a perjorative. I call myself an Atheist (because I am) and as long as I don't go around messing with other people about their religiosity, why hate me?

as long as you dont mess with someones religion, there is no reason to mess with you. But keep in mind, the attitude of most (in this instance, most is appropriate) of the athiests in this forum (and why people who dont even believe in any religion would post all day in a religion forum is beyond me) are mostly here to insult & mock people who do believe in God.

Just read a bit around here and see how people are treated that belive in God.

That's interesting. I think the 'Christian vs. Atheist' war on at the moment is more to do with *corporate* Christianity and the non-believing backlash. Islam has always been better equiped when it comes to percieving technology (as that has usually been an excuse for persecution in Christianity) but here it's just buzzwords being used that are out of control

I don't hate anyone. If you are an atheist that is your choice and I never use the word "atheist" as an insult. My displeasure comes from the folks who insult and mock people of faith. I believe we can discuss and disagree without throwing around insults and name calling.

I don't get it. Freedom of religion or non-religion is what this US was founded on. People fled to avoid religious persecution. I really don't have any specific beliefs, I just try to be humane and treat others with respect. Does that make me an atheist? If so...thats okay.

I have noticed that atheist are the most hating, miserable, and self-centered people on this site. I always thought the muslims would be....I was wrong!

I don't know why atheists hate Christians so much. It seems irrational, but then again...so does atheism itself.

I am atheist also. All opinion polls indicate that we are detested and mistrusted by the general public and for what reason I do not know.

Anger, skepticism, and ridicule are all based on fear. Fear of the "unkown".
Get educated.
