All the wrong answers above (it's a CHESS GAME, guys!) demonstrate the stupidity of online translators. If you yourself don't know French, you shouldn't be answering these questions!

lit. : "Game of chess made for school"
as some above pointed out, "échec" alone stands for failure
(someone or sth. being in checkmate position), but i've never heard that in combination with "Jeu", so i assume it stands for a real chess game.

"échec" is a Noun, masculine
(a) failure; setback; defeat; subir un ~ to suffer a setback
(b) les ~s chess; jouer aux ~s to play chess; mettre/être en ~ to put/be in check; ~! check!; ~ et mat! checkmate!

Chess game made for a school, or for the school.
It should be échecs though, échec DOES mean "failure" (and also "check" in the chess sense).
