Oh man. I ran a program at a convention once in front of a HUGE HUGE crowd of people and it was my first time ever doing anything involving public speaking.

The best advice is to dress very comfortable, have some water handy (room temperature) in case you get shaky. Me, I like soda so I drank a soda before I ran my activity. If you can, have someone up on stage help you out unless you are only giving a speech. I had to run a program involving political parties and had to divide people up into mock parties (in america) and then they had to campaign. For that I had help with a panel of judges ("electors"). As time goes by, your speaking gets easier. Just do anything you can to try to avoid being nervous. What do you like to do? sleep? Get a good night's sleep before you sleep. Do you smoke? Smoke a cig before you speak. Do anything that makes you more calm. Anything you can. Believe me...I didn't and I got shaky and really nervous. My voice was quivering too :S
It's actually not that bad. It should come to you naturally believe it or not. Just don't look at individual people. Look at general areas where tables are or chairs or wherever people are at in groups.

Also, KNOW WHAT YOU'RE SPEAKING ABOUT!!!!! If someone asks you a question and you don't have an answer say "I'll get with you after I'm done here". Remember to thank the audience and give your name.

Take a deep breath when you're finished!

I wish you luck.

flashpoint's advice is good!!

In my case, i never have gotten over the fear, but I have so much practice, that nobody can tell how afraid I am. I have social anxiety, but I have worked hard at it all my life. So you CAN do this!!

Since I am so scared, what I used to do was write a note across the top of my notes, "watch your pitch and speak slowly and don't fidget." to remind myself not to get squeaky and talk too fast and rock back and forth or fuss with a pen, whatever. That way I had a reminder right before doing the event. Make sure you know your stuff.

Good luck!!
