No, dont, keep it the way it is...its a natural insulation against cold and heat.. just kepp it brushed and bathe it on occasion... your pooch will be fine...smile....
oh and great choice of dog!! I used to own one but she passed away 2 years ago.. they are the most devoted loveable dogs you could ever have.....look at my 360 and see my pooches...smile
Edit: no criticism here!!!! I love Border Collies and they are great I had one that past away almot 2 yaers ago and she was the most loyal, devoted, great with kids, and just plain special dog taht I have ever owned... not to knock the dogs I have... I just tend to go towards rescue... and they most of the time they pick me or find me...lol..... I currently have a Shephard Mastiff mix and a West Virginia Black Dog(she was found wandering in West Virginia and we have absolutely no clue what's she is mixed with.. see my 360.... I think its Border collie of some sort but she has these bowed legs like a Basset?? kinda strange but she and my other pets birds/cats dogs are all rescues so good for you for taking in any pet whatever it is!!!!!congrats for your new addition to your family.....seriously dont cut the hair though just trim any matts.. and brush regularly.....smile

Not all dogs hair goes bad after shaving them down, but many do. The hair looks similar to if only the undercoat grows back. The colored top coat doesn't always come back nice at all. The hair looks frizzy and very light in color. It is not easy to cut the hair down to 1- 11/2 inches. It depends on the way the hair lays on the dog. However, the dog will shed just as much only now they will shed shorter hairs. You can get her trimmed with no problem but I guess my feelings also about shaving her down is why did you get this breed of dog if you don't like the hair? All dogs are different, so I can't tell you how short you can go without causing any coat damage. Just be aware that it can happen and once it does there is no going back to that beautiful natural coat. I say daily brushing is your best option.

Absolutely!!! Especially if hes a swimmer. You dont have to go as far as shaving him, you can always ask the groomer for a puppy cut. This haircut makes his fur one length all over, leaving the coat short and fluffy, you can determine the length of the clip with his groomer. Or you can go with the shavedown, a very popular summer haircut for just about any breed. Whichever haircut you choose for your dog, make sure no one laughs at him. If its his first haircut of this nature, he will feel self-conscious. If you laugh at him, he will feel silly, and hide. If you tell him how great he looks, how sexy, you can make him feel like a million bucks!!! If you get him shaved close, just make sure he doesnt spend too much time in the sun right after the haircut, you wouldnt want your dog to get a sunburn. If it turns out you dont like the haircut, dont worry, it grows back fast. Border Collies always look super cute to me in a puppy cut.

No, i have a border collie myself and when there is hot weather, just make sure they have plenty of water and shade. Their smart enough to figure out where to sit so they dont get too hot. Their hair is very layered so i dont really see how cutting it would make a difference, the only difference that could be made is through shaving the dog, but that is very drastic and not really something i would do myself. Oh and dogs don't sweat, they dont have any sweat glands on their skin, only on their feet, they get rid of their body heat through panting.

We have a wonderful weather man in Reno, Nevada, who always shares this bit of info when the weather gets either warmer or colder. He says if you are cold or too warm, your dog is too! Too many people think their pets can handle frigid temperatures because they have fur, but that is not the truth at all.
I'll bet your Border Collie would love a haircut for the summer and adore you for being such a caring friend. Have a fantastic day! Annie

I have a Border Collie who is 11 years old, the only thing that we do is trim his feathers and his butt area. I brush him on a regular basis and have him groomed every 8 weeks.

NO!! Shaving the hair off of these dogs takes away their insulation from the heat, actually making these dogs hotter and more uncomfortable. Shaving also makes them more susceptible to sunburn as well.
