It never ceases to amaze me how VERY LITTLE most Christians know about the origins of their own religion and it's symbols....
The Jesus Fish comes from one source: ancient Greek language. Jesus was associated with a fish, due to the stories of the bible, the references to being a fisher of men, etc. The greek word for fish is "ichthys". Each of these letters, in Greek, represents the phrase "Jesus Christ, Son of God, Savior." (i=jesus, ch=christ, thy=son of god, s= savior.)
Perhaps some christians can learn from an atheist today...

The vesica piscis is a symbol made from two circles of the same radius, intersecting in such a way that the center of each circle lies on the circumference of the other. The name literally means the bladder of the fish in Latin. In the Christian tradition, it is a reference to Christ, as in ichthys. It is called a mandorla ("almond") in India and known in the early Mesopotamian, African, and Asian civilizations.

The basic fish symbol existed long before Jesus' time and is inscribed on many pagan temple and other structures.
Originally it was vertical and was a pagan fertility symbol representing the female genitalia.
When Christianity came along the symbol was taken over by the early Christians as a way of displacing earlier pagan beliefs - in much the same way as Christmas replaced a pagan festival, churches were built on old pagan meeting places and so on.
So anyone who uses the fish symbol - on their car, for example - is actually displaying a symbol of the female genitalia.... enough said.

The use & significance of the 'Jesus fish' comes from the well-know bible story wherein Jesus fed the multitude w/a coupla loaves of bread & an endless supply of fish from a bottomless basket. They'd been listening to him preach all day & got hungry.

No the Fish Represent that he was there to be a fisher of men. And also eternal life because in that time and culture the fish was the life giving source of food. So Jesus used a fish to show that he was the life giving bread of God.

No it represents the fact that Jesus Christ is the only way to life and that Christians are "fishers of men." That is what the early Christians believed.

The fish is representitive of Jesus because he was born at the dawning of the age of Pisces.
Well, that's one theory anyway. The wise men WERE astrologers, y'know......

It's because of posts like yours that Yahoo Answers doesn't function as it should, but as a playground for bored and stupid children. True.
