Only one reason, this was told to me by the Vet. It is because they crave Chlorophyll. If you can, smash up a piece of green bean in it's food, I mean just a touch and do this often and this will benefit your cat and won't eat grass that could be infected or polluted.
They eat that grass and cannot digest it and puke it up. Oh nasty so give the cat what it is missing in it's diet, cooked green bean or talk to Kitty's Vet sometimes the vitamins they offer help. But this is cheaper.

Cats eat grass because of nutritional needs. In the wild, cats eat mice which have plants in their stomachs. But pet cats eat cat food, which does not have grass inside.

the main reason cats eat grass is because it makes them cough and get any fur balls up that they have in their throat. they cant get them out any other way. be careful of your cat when its eating grass though because some kinds of plants can be harmful as they dont just eat grass, they also eat flower petals etc. there is a special kind of grass that you can get from most pet stores that you grow yourself in a carton, and it is especially made for cats fur balls. if your cat eats a lot of grass then maybe you should try this as its a much safer grass for them to eat.

Cats don’t eat grass as a source of nutrients. For them eating grass has a purely mechanical function. Ingested blades of grass trigger regurgitation of indigestible or hard to digest matter, like the cats’ own hair swallowed during grooming, or fur and bones of prey. Expelling this matter through regurgitation, similar to birds of prey, is safer than allowing it to pass through the digestive tract where it could possibly cause a blockage.
Provide indoor cats with potted grass at all time, as they may otherwise chew on houseplants. Discourage your cats from eating grass right after eating a meal, however, as they may unintentionally regurgitate their dinner.

It's not true that cats eat grass only when they aren't feeling well. They just eat it.
I have had three cats and they eat grass every day. I do believe it helps with digestion, fiber for them. Sometimes they may throw up, but rarely does this happen.
They just like it.

Cats eat grass for the same reason that dogs do. To make themselves feel better when they are sick or when their stomachs hurt.

Contrary to popular belief, it is not really known. Vets have made assumptions, and now think that they "just like it".
It may make them sick, but not always, it does nothing for them but there are some schools of thought that say it cleans their teeth, but really no one is certain.
Dogs will also do it especially if there are cats in their family group.
