Our cat used to be called Mona, but now my wife started calling her Hen. What should I do?

I like Mona better. What sort of silly name is Hen? Maybe you both should both just call your pet what you want (I think Mona is better)......as long as you give her love and affection and everything a pet deserves, she'll be happy.

Our cats have their names and they have their nick names. They respond to both and like them both. I really don't think that this will make any difference to your cat. They take to nick names as people do, so don't worry. You call your cat Mona if you want and she can call her Hen. I should not personally put my opinion in on the name "Hen", but seriously, I don't think it is a good name. ( it really sucks) . Sorry, no offense to your wife nor you. So please don't be mad. One thing, you did not mention how old your cat is and how long it has been responding to Mona. This can really make a difference. I think your cat will adjust though, they are allot smarter that most give them credit for. I have to wonder, why Hen? Like an older chicken?

Cats are smart - you keep calling her Mona if that's really what you care about, and your wife can keep calling her Hen. The cat can figure it out, I promise. Besides, the chances of her actually COMING when you call her are slim to none, anyway.
Good luck.

Hi!

Start calling your wife by a different name and see how she likes it! ;-) hehe.

To be honest, cats recognise the sound of their name because of the lenght, syllables and way it is said. But they will rarely let you control them in any way by using their name.

My cat is called Morrissey (after The Smiths!) but we more often call him all kinds of things like Moo Moo, Mr Magoo, Moomin, Button Moon, Buster Ryhmes, Chicken N Chips, Oochie Coochie Moo..... Lucifer (haha, no I'm kidding!)..... My point is, he responds to all these things when he feels like it. So having two names won't be the end of the world. But it's a bit silly for your wife to change its name now! And *why* Hen?! lol!

If you want to keep calling your cat Mona, keep calling her Mona. She'll probably come to you more anyway, and that will teach your wife a lesson! ;-)

xx Emmie

hmmm..... disturbing, huh? well, you can tell her that for so many years (or days, how many did you have your cat?), you got used to call her Mona and now a suden change's going to take a HUGE time to settle down! even if then she doesn't understand, then just ignor, talk about da difference between Mona and the stupid name Hen! that ought to make her think about it! Hen is such a silly name to give to a sweet, beautiful cat! hunfortunate!

how long have you had the cat? you don't change a childs name in mid-adolecence...so why do it to a cat? i call my cat by many other silly names than his name, but i will never change it. are you sure your wife isn't just using Hen as a pet name? My cat only answers to his real name, and not his pet names... i know most cats don't answer at all, but mine is half dog i swear.

As T. S. Elliott says "The naming of cats is a difficult matter". According to him a cat has three names, the one used daily by the family, the one used by other cats, and lastly the private name she calls herself, known only to her. Therefore, since it will matter little to her what you call her since you will never know her true name, to keep marital harmony you can each call her what you like.

You call her Mona and let yur wife call her what she wants to. It will make for one very confused cat, but what the hell. As long as your marriage stays sane.
