It is not rude. In fact, it is much less rude than listening to music at work without headphones. I have a pod mate at work who has rather bad taste in music. I wish he would use head phones.

I don't like that you said "the things he say", it's "the things he says", dear. Yes, it is rude and inappropriate at most work places to listen to headphones, and if he is your colleague, you should be honest to him and/ or just don't let him bother you and stay away from him. That's the easy way out though, pretty much everybody has to work with someone they don't like, so you're just going to have to get over it. Sorry if that's not the answer you want, but oh well, life goes on. God bless.

Oh my gosh. Did someone object to your typing? Petty.
If your employer's do not have a problem with the head phones, then it is perfectly acceptable.
I would do the same in your situation. If not against company policy, go with it.
If he is really a bother, must tell someone (supervisor or whomever) about it.
If co-worker does not like it, so be it. Keep yourself sane for the 7 - 8 hours you are working.
You are not paid enough (in any situation) to put up with unnecessary irritation nor is his need to communicate anything to do with you.

You're there to work, not listen to music or your colleague (unless it's work oriented). 1. be more tolerent of others, annoying people are good practice. 2. Focus on your work, you'll not hear him when you're concentrating. 3. Ask you manager if there is a seat a little further away from him/her.
4. Decide you really hate the job, not your co-worker and get out of there. Then persue your true passion.

I suppose i listen to them sometimes but I try not to because it seems every time i put them on someone has something to say to me so i have to take them out my ears and turn off my i-pod and listen to them. But I guess it is rude it kind of looks like your company is not good enough so the person need music to make it better from the other persons point of view.

It depends on what work you do. If you're expected to answer the phone, you shouldn't wear headphones. If you are struggling to be productive because of the nuisance of a coworker, I see nothing wrong with wearing headphones to curtail further interaction with that person, as long as your boss doesn't have a problem with it.

It depends on what you do for a living. If you are a receptionist, than it would be rude. If you work in an office where you do not need to continually chat with your co-workers and customers, than it would not be rude. Check your company policy.

It's rude to listen to music on speakers at work, but not with headphones.

Not at all. I work in a small department of developers and testers and we are all permitted to use headphones at our desks.
I would ignore the guy, the more embarrassed/frustrated/upset you appear to be over his comments, the more he will continue to harrass you.

Only if it would interfere with your work, like talking to clients. Otherwise, I think that's preferrable to listening to music without them, since everyone has a different style they like. Oh, but maybe wear earbuds, so you can just nod your head and smile whenever you see his lips moving.
