Depression could be a simple mood swing or what one calls 'Clinical Depression'. You will get a good insight on the subject on the following pages on wikipedia. Just go to
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Depression_%28mood%29
and
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Clinical_depression
And of course, children being in the still impressionable age are actually quite prone to depression but most of the times it goes unnoticed.

Children can be depressed, just like adults. If the depression is caused from a chemical imbalance, it can be corrected by taking a medication for five or six weeks. A blood screen can determine whether or not the depression is chemical or clinical.
Some of the signs of depression are a lack of energy and interest in the things we enjoyed before, crying, sleeping more, feeling hopeless and/or suicidal, not eating, isolating, and the list goes on.
Most people are amazed when they find out how easily depression can be treated. Kids need to be taken to a doctor as soon as a parent can get an appointment. Kids really don't understand the concept of depression as adults do, so they aren't able to share what's going on. I hope this helps a little. Annie

yes children can have depression. They have the same feelings we do and because they don't know how to deal with them (depending on their age) it is very important to look for the signs and get them help right away. help can come from many different forms like, one on one time just you and that child away from distractions, counselors, church, support groups, activities, etc. warning signs that your child might be getting depressed might be, isolation, crying,no longer eating, over eating, withdrawn,no longer talking with friends/family,destruction,anger,sadness, and so many more. depression is scary for any age. Be patient as depression can last for several months and make sure the child knows that together they will get through this.

Symptoms of depression vary from person to person but usually include seclusion, lack of appetite, trouble sleeping, feeling tired, lack of focus, weight loss or gain and sometimes lack of hygiene. And yes kids can have it.Kids as young as 4 and 5 have been diagnosed with depression. It usually comes from some tragedy or major change in their life like divorce, or a death in the family.
