ok, so...I had braces for a grand total of five years :) woohoo...When you first get them, yes it will hurt, but i reccommend you take a heavy dose of motrin before you go, it will help, i promise :)! you will not be in pain forever, but for the first few months or so, yeah..your teeth are adjusting and the inside of your mouth is tender, not being used to the harshness of the braces. but eventually, it will be better. you're going to have to watch what foods you eat, and (i did this when i was in school) sneak into the bathroom after lunch to brush your teeth so any little bits of food dont stay in your braces.

braces can be fun though, eventually they become a part of you, and you love them. my fav. part was getting to choose the colors of the bands...i would always do holiday, or seasonal colors. ^_^

good luck with the braces sweetie, they arent the end of the world ^_~ if you have any questions about them, please dont hesitate to email me!

Im 21 in a few days and i am thinking of having braces again (mine broke lol). They are not as bad as most people make out and think of what you'll look like in about 4 years compared to everyone else.
They tell you dont do this and dont eat that but i used to eat what i liked and it was fine. The only problem i had was cheap chewing gum sticking to the metal.
Is it a retainer brace because thats what i had and yeah it did hurt a bit they you get used to it.
A good tip the first few days is hard to get the brace in and out for cleaning but if you run freezing cold water in your mouth it numbs it a little. Hold your head upside down with the water in your mouth still and push the brace on. Make sure you get some water behinde it, It really does help.
The pain will ease i promise whatever you do DONT give up. It will be over in no time. The only other time it might hurt is when it gets tightened but again it doesnt last forever.
I think the only big objection i have with them is that they can take the enamel off your teeth which i dont think you can replace with lotions and potions, but if you look after your teth it should be alright.
Im getting married soon and wish i had gone back and had them sorted as soon as my brace broke, but with a bit of luck i can get another brace fitted after the wedding.
Anyway good luck hun. hope it all works out for you. And remeber 1 of the first things blokes see when your older and out on the pull is you smile and teeth.
Stick at it, its worth it. X

Ah yes- braces! Been there, done that! Here are some tips from someone who knows lol. Take some Advil an hour before the ortho visit. Ask your doctor how long you should keep taking the Advil. Have your mom get stuff that doesn't require hard chewing. Your teeth will be sore, but the Advil will help- chewing will hurt though for at least the first day. Take the Advil every time you get them tightened. Tightening won't be as rough as the first time. Stay home from school, get lots of yummy soft or liquid stuff, rent some movies and treat yourself! You'll be wishing you could do it again!

I was in my late 20's when I got mine. I am not sure what type you are getting, mine were called invisible but not the invislyne that are out now.

The dentist will make a mold of your teeth, this is a mold that fits into your mouth, he will put goo inside and let it sit until it is hard. He will keep this to show how your teeth are changing. they usually give them to you after your done with your braces.

After that he will glue little plastic things to the outside of your teeth. Then he attaches tiny rubberband things to each plastic thing. Each month you visit him so he can remove the bands and replace them. This will tighten the teeth slowly. I am not sure how bad your teeth are to keep them in for that long. I had mine for just about 1 year.

Now I have to stress to you little missy that if you take pride in your smile, you will do everything the dentist tells you to do. Including brushing your teeth after you eat , no matter what you eat. Because the food will get stuck under the braces and will leave a stain.

Also, no eating nuts, hard bagels anything like that because it could break the plastic off of your tooth and then you will have to go back for a visit so he can replace it.

I was able to eat pretty well exept when they were tightend every month. My teeth were very sore for about 24 hours. I usually only drank my food, soups and stuff, mashed potatoes, anything that did not require using my teeth to chew.

good luck kid, but when you get older what a knockout you will be.

I'm not going to lie to you, it hurts. Not when you are actually getting the braces on (bring chapstick though cuz your mouth will be open for awhile) but it will hurt like hell (everyone's different though, braces may not bother you at all) the next day and a couple days after. Just take some Tylenol and make sure you have softer foods to eat for a couple days. Every month or so you'll get them tightened and the first couple times you do that you'll be sore. Don't worry, eventually, it won't hurt to get them done anymore, it just takes time. It's cool when you get braces off because you look so much older and more mature. I felt pretty when I first got them off. Make sure you brush your teeth good so you don't get ugly stains. Good luck!

It is only slightly uncomfortable (so my 14 yo said when he had them put on) you will get used to them in a day or two and not really be bothered by them much. You should avoid real hard food (uncooked carrots and stuff like that) (the orthodontist will give you a list) DOn't worry about it changing the way you look, because so many kids get them around your age it isn't a big social stigma anymore. Just make sure to remember to brush often and floss once a day since the braces are a place where plaque build up will occur

I have had braces put on AGAIN! When you get it on it will hurt but to quickly relieve yourself of the pain take Tylenol when it is unbearable and chew things, yes chew things, it may be painful but it goes away faster. You CANNOT eat popcorn, chips, gum that aren't sugar free, and anything hard because they can loosen brackets. Do eat soft items and if are going to eat something hard chew on it slowly. And you won't be in pain forever. You'll get the hang of them. They only hurt the 1st time and when you get them tightened.

And it may seem weird but brushing after every meal even in school helps take care for them.

**If you are getting rubber bands--WEAR THEM! I had a friend who didn't wear them EVER and now he has to keep his braces on for another 2 years, he already had them for 3. They may hurt but they help!

I wore braces many many years ago but I will tell you what I do remember. They do hurt sometimes. The metal rubs against the inside of your mouth. I was told not to chew gum, eat taffy or peanut butter. You will not be in pain forever. It is well worth it when you have those perfectly straight teeth! Good luck!

Braces hurt for a few days because your teeth are being pullued closer together, and your braces will scratch the inside of your mouth/lips at first. You can eat soft food for a few days- my mom bought me Ranch style beans and I loved them. You won't be in pain forever though sometimes you will be uncomfortable.

It will be ok. I actually had braces when I was in college, which was weird. You'll feel your teeth move, and for the first few days after each adjustment, you'll need to live on soft foods, like soup and milkshakes. But after those couple of days each time, you'll be fine.

Your mouth will be sore, but it doesn't hurt really bad. You'll be ok.
