Be honest. He or she will respect that much more than a made up excuse that they will probably see through anyway. Instructors hate to be lied to and consider it a real insult to their intelligence. They are human also - everyone screws up now and then. You should ask what you can do to make up the work missed and show a genuine desire to make up for your mistake.

How about the truth. Most college professors have heard all the lies and wild tales. If you overslept, just apologize and ask if there is any way you could get the notes or attend another lecture (if he teaches multiple classes on the same subject). Trust me, teachers prefer the truth and most are rather forgiving for the occasional blunder.
or you could tell him the twin lawn gnomes in your neighbor's yard have had it in for you for years and this morning they finally succeed in kidnapping you. After chewing through the old Christmas lights that they tied you up with, you were able to battle them off successfully in the back shed with a rake you found next to the body of the paperboy (who has obviously been dead awhile, which explains why you haven't been able to do your morning crossword while eating your Wheaties.) . I'm sure he will believe this one. Or you could tell your professor the truth.

just tell the truth.. if you don't usually miss class and are a good kid he should understand.
If you can't do that say family emergency. It would be rude of him to press you on that and you can say it is personal and you can't go into details. He won't call your family to check up.

be responsible for your mistakes dear...
tell him to believe and he can give you extra work or assg, to make him believe... just splash some dirt or mud on your shirt, and tell him you fall down right in your face, so you need to clean up 1st.. but you are too late for the coming back for the class after back home cleaning it up.. thats why you misses your class..
make him happy by offering him to give you extra work,.. just to show, you really feel bad on missing his class.. dont give funny face.. or laugh or smile, giggling... he wont give you excuses..

You could tell him somebody is really sick and is about to pass away. He's not gonna ask for proof of that, that would be unethical. Like tell him your grandma is sick or something and you had to take her to an appointment at the hospital cuz she can't drive and she lives out of town.

Tell him the truth - that you screwed up. If you start making excuses , you'll end up no where. Excuses are useless!!! Besides, do you think your professor is that gullible?

I say someone died or got in a car accident. It's wrong, but it works. Well, in h.s. the teacher called my parents and that SUCKED. But it works if your in college. One time I said I had contagious conjunctivitis and my eyes blew up. (they really did). that didn't work though.
