I have a GoVideo VHS/DVD recorder with the same problem, it picks and chooses what it wants to play. The only reason I haven't thrown the expensive piece of crap in the garbage is that it's a pretty good recorder once you decipher the manual.

Not all DVD players read R and RW disks. The player has to be 1 or 2 years old.

The disk has to be support (+ or -).

RWs have the worst success rate.

On -R you have to finalize the disk before it can be played.

Type of disks used can also be a factor, some reflect light better.
