I do agree with your question all the way around.

But, also it depends on where someone lives. In an apartment I would rig up some kind of fence out the balcony or yard with a roof so the cat can get out for some fresh air and hear the birds. Also, one can train on a harness and leash and take the cat outside.

I do feel sorry for cats that have to stay indoors and want out. Some cats love to be inside, but the majority needs to be out.

I kept my kittens inside for 4 months, then rigged up a fence outside. When they wanted to roam outside the fence I knew it was time for them to be free. I live on 3 acres and no traffic problems. They both have their collars with my phone numbers.

Keeping them in for four months has made them wanting to stick around the house and not run off. They know when to come in for the night. Training is the key.

Yes, it's cruel to keep them inside, but if someone really has to it's better than the humane society.

I guess it depends on where you live. I live in a rural area and I have one cat that likes to go out and one that does not. It has been my experience that cats generally stick around the house when they go out. They love the fresh air and to eat grass. However I don't leave the cat out when I'm at work or going to be gone for a long period of time. I am always home when she goes out. I am also a bird lover so I protect them from my cat. Putting a bell on the neck will help this but most of my cats have found a way to get it off. If you live in a neighborhood with lots of houses people may not be happy if you let the cat roam to much. You can just hang out with your cat when you let him out and keep him in when you can't and that way you can keep the cat safe and he can still enjoy some outdoor time.

Either in or out, depending on circumstances, growing up I lived in a village and our cats stayed away from the main road, lots of kids and pets around it was a quiet area and so very few road deaths resulted, our cats lived a happy and healthy 20 years. If you live near any kind of fast road then indoors is much safer for cats as long as they have space and enough to keep them entertained, human slaves to play with as many hours as possible! A happy healthy life versus being hit by a car at the age of 2, I know which I think is the more cruel.

I'm trying to figure out WHY you ask this question if you are so POSITIVE you should let them out. It's always a risk for your cats to be outside. We have coyotes here, and just because a cat looks like he's bored (don't they always? LOL) doesn't mean you should take the risk of them getting eaten, hit by a car, pranksters, or whatever. I let my cats out, but mostly they like to be inside, and I have a dog to keep the coyotes out. Seems wierd, but my cats almost never leave my yard.

As for declawing, a lot of vets won't do it anymore. They actually have to cut off the tip of the bone to prevent the nail from growing back. Just looking at these poor cats after surgery is heartbreaking. There are so many other ways to train a cat without hurting them.

For the safety of the cats, I think they should be mostly indoor. I take my cat out on walks, and he is harnessed at all times, insuring his safety. I could not bear to think what would happen to him if I let him have the run of the neighborhood. I have seen many cats dead by the side of the road, or leftover carcasses of kitties, and don't feel it's safe for cats to roam freely.
The life expectancy of an outdoor cat is 2-5 years, while an indoor cat can live well into their 20's.

Cats are natural animals but however if you live in an environment where it might not be safe for a cat to go out as it might to be put to a risk of danger, also they like to hunt and this makes bird owners and fish overs and generally people who don't like them in thier gardens very mad.

I keep my cat indoors because my neighbour lurred the other one into her home and life and if they do go outside believe me they will go where ever they see food. So my current cat which is still a kitten stays indoors for a number of reasons. It might sound cruel but it's not if they have been brought up that way and not yearning every 5 minuets to go outside.

I have 3 cats 2 are rag doll an one is moggy and all of them live indoors.I have had cats in the past that have been out door cats several of which have been hit by cars and killed ,even though i live in a quiet area it does happen. The life span of indoor cats is lot longer that out door cats, mine have a run in the garden so on lovely sunny days they can go ly on the grass an enjoy it but still are nice and safe so i would have to go with the indoor living as best.

I keep my cat Mia who is a rag doll inside only! I have had 2 cats murdered by cat killers. There are mean people who will kill cat just for the thrill of it. I had a neighbor who thought I was mean for keeping my cat Gracie inside and this neighborhood cat killing creep killed her cat Baby. My Gracie live to be 16 & 1/2 years old. There are more dangers than just cars. There are also stray dogs who kill cats. I am bieng kinder to my cat by keeping her safe! If I had a house I'd consider a cat tunnel or kennel for the cat to play in outside. But I live in an apt. complex of over 160 apts and there is no way she can get outside anyway. I also live in an ara next to a mall. Not cat safe. I am thinking of getting a cat stroler so I can take her out for walks.

I think for the most part cats should be indoors. I do not, however, see a problem letting them outside from time to time. Just make sure the cat is fixed and if you do choose to declaw only have the front done. If you live on a very busy road or there are a lot of stray cats outside then you may want to think twice about it. All cats I have had from childhood to adult have been allowed outside and have never really had a problem with them.

I think that it depends on the cat. I have a couple cats and some like to stay inside all the time and others like to go outside. I think that the cats should have the option to go outside.

If someone does not want their cat going outside sell clear boxes that go in your window (sort of like an air conditioner) that your cat can sit in.
