It might be because that people think, well some of them do, that saying complicated words make them smart! E.G parallelogram.. well not really that word but you know what i mean. It really has no proper explanation but then..you know you might just want to call them show offs sometimes or even nerds( no offense to anyone.)

yeah my friends girlfriend was like that - she didn't even know what half the words meant. She made a complete idiot of herself in the end and everybody laughed at her.

Weren't you taught that in school? Speak with precision. But also know your audience. If you use words that they can't understand, they'll just resent ya.
