It all started with the Voter Rights Act of 1975. This Act amended the original Voter Rights Act of 1965, perverting the original intent of the Act by requiring that voting material be printed in foreign languages if a certain percentage of voters in a particular jurisdiction spoke a language other than English. The original Voter Rights Act of 1965 was necessary legislation that helped blacks achieved voter turnout parity with whites; however, the 1975 amendment started us down the road of where we are today.

I don't know why this Act was at all justified. How can someone become a citizen of the US, and not be able to speak and be functionally literate in English? Even worse this Act was expanded in 1992 by the bilingual-ballot measure that required counties with more than 10,000 residents, who speak the same non-English language and lack proficiency in English, to provide bilingual voting ballots. And listen to the language (no pun intended) of this legislation, residents not citizens just residents. 10,000 residents is nothing in most counties surrounding even small urban centers. 10,000 residents would be less than 2-3% of the given county's total population, who may not even be citizens. This seems like a tremendous waste of tax payer dollars.

Once the Government started providing foreign language services for legal/illegal aliens, corporations in search of the Almighty dollar followed suit. Instead of taking the high road and unilaterally stating that some things like our culture and language are sacrosanct, and if you want to do business with us you must learn English, they chose a different path. A path in which Corporations sold what little soul they had left to gain as many customers as possible. And in an attempt to continually one up each other, they started to provide more services in foreign languages. Of course they did not realize that if all corporations offer foreign language services their net gain will zero, the same as if no corporations offer these services.

It's gotten to the point now where you can do your banking is a foreign language, pay all of your bills in a foreign language, and even watch a wide selection of Cable TV in a foreign language. So tell me, if you can life your entire existence within the United States without knowing English, what is your incentive to learn it?

Sadly it is cultural weakness on the part of our society and its leaders. In the past there was bluntness to life, an either/or approach that does not sit well with modern life. It is unfortunate that reality may teach us a different lesson. Those who speak in favor of allowing multi-lingualism should try going to a foreign country and insisting that everything be explained in only English.

Well people used to come here wanting to live in America and become Americans.

Now immigrants come here wanting American freedoms but they want the country to become Cuba,/Mexico/Vietnam or whatever INSIDE America so they can have their cake and eat it too.
