Wow.
Even though expedited services take on or about 3-4 weeks, you might not get your passport in time. I've read on here that the turnaround time for passports is horrid due to new requirements with passports.
If you could, I would delay the vacation a month or two and apply for the passport yesterday.

I was at the post office the other day and there was a sign that said Expedite it for like $98.00. I don't know how quick it is but if you have all your papers and photo it should be about 1 month to process a passport normally. My boyfriend said he got his in 3 weeks.
If you are renewing your passport it should be pretty quick.

You can get 2 week service with the US government, but if you are really worried, I would suggest a google search for "passport expediters". I used abriggs and got mine in about 3 days once for an urgent trip. Costs a little more, but you get it pretty fast.

there are no guarantees - even if a courier service is used. the best advice is dont book the tickets untill you have the passport in hand. see below for the current processing times:

February-April is the busiest time of year for Passport Services, with Americans planning spring break and summer trips. The best advice is, “Apply Early!” Or even “now’” if you might be checking out deals on airfare or hotels outside the U.S.
If you are traveling or need your passport in order to get a visa within the next 10 days, please call us at the National Passport Information Center or use the link below to check the status of your application online.
If you have already applied but will not need your passport within the next two weeks:
Don't worry, please!!! There should be no need to contact us at this time. Our goal is to make sure that no one misses a trip. We have added staff and are working overtime across the country.
Checking the status of your application: You can check the status of your application online. Currently, it is taking up to 7 days for Expedited Applications and up to 3 weeks for Routine Applications to be tracked online. You can get a 'rushed' passport but they charge you a premium for it.
I can't remember how much.
