I've found that people who do this feel that they have to impress/belittle others. I knew a guy that always did this i.e. "Her attire is markedly diaphanous" which made him sound like an absolute pretencious jerk when he could have just said "Her dress is very see-through". These same people tend to be less intelligent as a whole. For instance: Mensa members will go on an on about their IQ and admittance to Mensa but are the most annoying idiots I've ever met. They also prep themselves and study (like for an SAT) so that they score higher on the IQ test - which anyone can do. Anyone that has to boast about their intelligence tends to project the opposite. Truly intelligent people don't brag about it, they put it to good use. Anyone else is a poser or a talker - never a doer. It also irritates me when someone uses four words where only one is needed.

When I was growing up, I used a large vocabulary as a weapon. When I felt insecure I would throw out a five cent word, as my grandfather called them, and try to impress those around me. I was so good that I eventually could string a series of concepts together that really didn't make sense if you stopped to think about it, but i rattled them off so quickly that most would assume I knew what I was talking about and didn't question me. As I've grown into adulthood, I realize that clear communication is more important than impressing someone and that usually means you need to humble yourself in order to help others.

we need good vocabulary for achieving better expression while talking or writing... however the language should be simple so that everybody understands your message...
you are right... there are some people who have attitude... speaking Shakespearean English in day to day interaction... it sounds like an abnormal behaviour...
