It does point ahead to baptism. Notice Romans 6:3-4.
In verse 4, it says at baptism we rise to walk in "newness of life". At birth a new life begins. At baptism a new life begins. You can not be saved unless you are "born again" into this new life!
Also these verses say that we are "baptized into Christ". Can we be saved out of Christ?
These verses say we are "baptized into his death". At his death is where His saving blood was shed and offered for our sins. The blood washes away sins (Rev. 1:7). If we do not contact his death, how can we contact and be washed in that blood? In Acts 22:16, Paul was told to be baptized and wash away his sin.
Jesus said, "He that believes and is baptized shall be saved". (Mark 16:16)
Some will tell you that one believes, is saved, THEN he shall be baptized. This is not the same thing Jesus said. It is not in the same order.
What would Jesus have said if he had meant, "He that believes and is baptized shall be saved"? I believe he said what he meant and meant what he said! I BELIEVE JESUS! "He that believes not shall be condemned." (Mark 16:16).
Baptism is to obey Christ. Christ saves those who obey Him (Hebrews 5:9), therefore, yes baptism saves! (1 Peter 3:21)
Baptism places us "into Christ" (Gal. 3:27), into contact with His death (Col. 2:12), and it is the new birth (Romans 6:3-4).
Acts 2:38 says baptism is "for the remission of sins", "unto the remission of sins", or "so that your sins will be forgiven" (depending on which translation you read).
