My oldest son came up with an idea of getting matching tattoos while he's in from USAF tour. He wants us to design a family crest that portrays all we've been thru together. (we had a hard life, we conquered the past, our future is bright) I have 5 kids, i don't believe in tattoos but when he put it like that...I want to do this! The pain the tattoo will cause us while getting it will be symbolic of the pain in our past, the family crest will be symbolic that NO matter what life throws our way WE can over come it! I don't want mine to show so I figured on the top of my big toe. I wear a bikini in the summer so I can't think of another place to put it without causing me to PASS out in pain. lol My b/f hates tattoos, he has NO clue were going to do this. I figured he can't complain if it's on my TOE. Socks cover them! He could never understand the meaning of this tattoo, he had a good life. This is really important, all my kids will get this same tattoo, once they all reach 18.

the whole idea is wonderful. but i wouldnt rec big toe, for several reasons, it will be more difficult to heal, it will be more painful than other areas, but the biggest thing would have to be the very nature of the skin there. you are not going to be able to get a tattoo of any size, there will be little detail and toes have lines in them so this will also cause some distortion. put all this together its a difficult thing to overcome. Re-think placement, i take on board all your reasons for placement choice, what about on your butt!! it signifies your past is all behind you!! i have one there, and despite my initial shame at showing my very good friend and tattooist my butt-i actually fell asleep having it done, i honestly did!! the whole idea is exciting, keep thinking about it, an answer will present itself, the very best of luck to you

It can be done, but keep in mind a few things. The toe is very bony and this will hurt a lot. Depending on what kind of shoes you wear, the rubbing on the tat will fade it faster. If you spend a lot of time in sandals (ie. flip flops), the sun will also fade it. The last thing to consider is that the lines can run together in time because the toe is so small.

That being said, my friend had a rose bud put on her big toe and it has been almost ten years and the colors haven't bled together too much. She doesn't spend any time in the sun and wears closed toe shoes almost everyday.

You can tattoo your big toe, however a family crest may be to large and look like a blob. If you really want one on your toe try tattooing a band around the toe like a toe ring. It can still be symbolic as well as look nice. Let him design some sort of tribal art and put it all the way around the toe.

A tattooist will do this but please bear in mind that this is going to hurt! Also, it's a really small area so if you are considering getting anything with any amount of detail then it's not going to work as it will be too small and could end up just looking like a blob of colour. A family crest implies that it would be quite big and grand. As long as the crest is simple it should look good though.

I love your tattoo idea, but if you want a crest on your toe, it's not a good idea. It will turn to a blob, especially if you wear sandals. Figure out somewhere else.

By the way, from your description, I cannot help but get an image of someone walking around in a bikini with socks on!

it can be done, but unless your family has abnormally large toes, a family crest would probably not look too good. from the way you are describing this, it seems that this is going to be a pretty detailed piece that on the tow, will most likely look like a blob.

why not get it on your hipbone? that's not a body part that is constantly being shown. or maybe on a shoulderblade.

it sounds like it's going to be an awesome family tattoo. good luck! (don't let your boyfriend ruin it for you and your kids!!)

Yeah of coarse it can be done. But most tattoo artists will not give you a warranty on (toes, fingers, hands, or feet), because they tend to lose color or not take color well. But they are very cute, especially if you wear sandals in the summer. I have one on the top of my foot and the first time it didn't take color so I went and had it redone and it looks great now.

Lol...well Hon, the big toe is going to hurt like hell, trust me...anywhere there is bone lying close to the skin underneath, the tat will cause more pain.

Getting a tat is likened to a sewing machine sewing down the length of the design, in and out....shooting ink into your skin. Everyone says the outline hurts the worse. I beg to differ, the coloring hurts more, because by the time they get the outline done, your skin is tender feeling even more.

I have two tats...one on my right leg, 3 inches above my ankle...its a 8x5 tat...and the other one is 2 inches down on my foot in front of my left ankle and its a 3 inch wolf's paw,...., that one hurt worse than the other one. There is no fat..in that area......

So...you may have to opt for another place to put your tat, why don't you try the inside of one of you legs, above the ankle...people really have to look to see them there....

But its going to hurt............!

Whatever floats your boat. How do you know all your kids want to go through the pain of getting a tattoo. Anyway I guess it can be done, my sister got strawberry's on the back of her feet.

It will wear off if it is on your toe. Not all tattoos are forever.
