I have a 1997 Jeep Cherokee and I think my water pump might be going bad. It is not over heating but more and ofter I keep finding a small puddle of coolant under my car right underneath where the water pump would be. Does anyone have any idea if this could be a bad water pump or something else?

I've had 2 Jeeps, check for radiator problems too, both had to have new radiators, it sucks but I've heard other people say Jeeps are really prone to radiator problems as well. My first Jeep (95 Grand Cherokee) leaked bad but I still drove it for a while and just kept filling the radiator and the second one didn't leak as bad but still needed replacement, just check it.

When it doesn't pump water?
The water pump is leaking from the weep hole or the front seal more than likely and I would replace it immediately! You don't want an over heating situation as the damage can be extensive and costly. If you aren't capable of self repair, you can probably get it done at a local shop for $100 give or take.
DON"T add any sealants! It won't solve the problem but it will create many more! Stay away from those after market "quick fix" remedies! Trust me on this one! 35 years in the business!

The water pump will go bad in many ways.

It will leak causing low coolant levels.
The pump bearings will make noise.
The pump impeller will spin on the shaft causing hotter running engine at driving speeds.
The pump impeller can be worn down not circulating the engine coolant causing hotter engines at driving speeds.
Never add sealant to the cooling system. It can clog the heater core causing no heat and maskmany other problems.

could be a leak from the radiator, radiator hose, water pump

now, the 97 to the 06 (realy don't know about the new ones) have a piece of sh!t for a radiator! it is some sort of metal radiator with a plastic top and bottom on it! the way the top seals is the plastic is crimped down to the metal with a small gasket inbetween them! Everyone I know has had some sort of trouble with it! do not waste your time and money with trying to fix this radiator!!!!! because it will leak again!! I brought mine back 3 times to the repair shop! go on ebay and get a 3 core metal radiator for about $150.

One of the first signs of water pump failure is coolant leakage from the shaft seal or bleed hole in the front of the water pump. This is the time to replace it before it fails completely.

yes that symptom is water pump (weeping out hole)... others include bearing noise, overheating, seizing... if it's not that bad you may try a sealant that can be added to your antifreeze but be careful...to much can cause blockage in your radiator
