First tell him to sit. When he does this, reward him with a treat and praise. Then put another treat in your fist and place it between his two front legs. He will probably dig at your hand but eventually he will lay down and try to get it. As soon as he does this, give him the treat. Soon he will learn that he laying down is rewarded with a treat and praise and soon you won't even need the treat...just some snuggles! :) Good luck!

doxen??? you mean Dashund???

yes, proper training involves treats. BUT you should only say the word once. use the treat as bait to position the dog correctly - GONE is the old way of doing things, where you push down on their bump and pull on their necks for sit.

I suggest going to formal Obedience classes which will also help socialize your pup. Something all dogs need.

For DOWN, you have the bait (soft treats) in your hand - show it to the dog, then turn your hand over and place your hand on the floor infront of the dog, saying DOWN. once. Eventually the hand signal works well and you wont even need to say the word.

Once he is sitting, hold a treat right at his nose. Slowly draw the treat straight down to the floor (you may need to lightly hold his rear end in place so he doesn't stand). If he doesn't lie down, slowly pull the treat across the floor away from him. He should walk his front paws forward to get the treat, causing him to lie down. Praise him and give him the treat when he does lie down.

If pulling the treat away doesn't work, sometimes moving the treat across the floor, toward him and between his front paws will do the trick. This causes the dog to curl in a bit and then lie down.

Good luck with this. Dachshunds (and most small dogs) can be difficult to train this command. Don't give up! Just be patient.

first answer's good, but a couple extra details - make sure there's nothing going on to distract your puppy (you and the puppy are alone in the room, no tv/radio) so he knows exactly what it is you want from him and why he's getting rewarded. also, don't give him a treat until after he's done what you want - the first time you say it!! otherwise, you're teaching him he can do what you say when he feels like it and that's cool with you. after he's done what you want (the first time) several times in a row, start giving him treats only every other time, then eventually every 3rd or 4th time, then just every now and then - the other times, just tell him what a good dog he is and scratch his head or something - so he learns that it's always good to do what you say and he never knows which time he gets something extra special (the treat).

I taught my dog to sit by first telling her to sit. Then I would snap my fingers, point down to the floor or touch my finger to the floor and tell her to laydown in a serious voice. She lays down everytime now. Do this with treats.

Hold a treat above thier heads and back it up. This will cuase them to go to a corner and sit. From there, lowerer the treat to the ground, and they should follow. Say "Good Sit (insert name!)" and give a treat.
