You can do little day trips. Let them bring a friend and go to the movies. You can also stay within your state and go to a bed and breakfast that's in a different city not to far from where you live. Give them the opportunity to explore parks, museums and other things that can be educational and fun. If you ski, go skiing for a couple of days or even camping. Check to see if there's a farm around your area that offers horse back riding. Ask your children what would they like to do that won't break the budget.

Whatever state you are in has a visitors guide, or bordering states. Get your hands on them. A lot of the national parks and museums are free or low cost and can be day trips. You can also plan a day of a picnic at a local park, ask some friends with kids and get a volleyball game or baseball game going. The time will pass really fast, then sit down with everyone for some much anticipated food. You can also plan a day or two to visit relatives that you and your kids don't get to see often (and maybe they will know of a inexpensive place to visit while you are with them). Good luck and God Bless.
