"Basically, the expected longevity of dye-based DVD-R and DVD+R is anywhere from 20 to 250 years, the same as CD-R discs. Some dye formulations such as phthalocyanine and azo last longer, more than a 100 years compared to 15 to 40 years for less stable dyes. Re-writeable DVD formats like DVD-RAM, DVD-RW, and DVD+RW, which use metallic materials that change the phase of the light, rather than light-sensitive dyes, have an expected lifetime of anywhere between 25 to 100 years. It’s important to remember that the quality of materials and production process can greatly affect the longevity of DVDs. Poor quality DVDs may deteriorate within a few years and produce errors or become unreadable within a year time" - see source below.

Since your DVD player4 projects a laser onto the disc's surface to read it, then yes, playing a DVD many times shortens its lifespan. This is especially true for DVDs that use light sensitive dyes.

The answer to this question is definantly not no. Yes you can wear it out just like you can wear out a cd. You are projecting a laser onto it that affects the dyd used and can wear it out faster than if it sat in a case all the time. The other culprit and the one that is more likely to happen, is that if your DVD player runs hot, and is not well ventilated, you may run into warping of the disc which will cause skipping. Yes you can wear it out.

Not really. What's more likely is scratching the back of the DVD from additional handling, and increasing the likelihood of the data pits not being read correctly. To really experience data loss, it would have to be in the thousands.

No, but taking it out and putting it back in can cause it to have fingerprints which can interrupt its playability. Just clean the back with some glass cleaner and a paper towel and it will be good as new.

No, but if you get it dirty or scratched by handling it, that is the most common problem that could affect replay.
