To achieve the flat or toned stomach, you need to do cardio to burn the fat and a variety (not just sit ups or crunches) of ab exercises.

Try some of the "tummy toning" workout routines there. And if you have hateful love handles, consider doing the no love for love handles workout routine. And if you want to kick it up a notch to abs, I recommend the Ab Boot Camp.

N.A.N.A.:
You are going to need a more aggressive plan other than walking and crunches. Crunches are good, and walking isn't bad but if you really want to take control you will need to get serious with a workout plan. As you get older your metabolism will only slow down making it more difficult for you to keep that "coca-cola" bottle body.
My recommendation is this. Focus on cardiovascular exercise for starters. This is aerobic in nature, meaning you get your heart rate up to about 70-80% of your maximum rate and you sustain it for 20-40 minutes at a time. If you can do this 3-5 times per week, you'll start to burn off that excess fat.
The strength training (crunches, etc.) will tighten the muscles that hide behind your fat stores. Continue to work them in this way. As you burn off the fat with cardio, the muscles will begin to be visible. I also recommend you do strength training for the rest of your muscle groups. Might as well be sexy all over, right?
Check out some of my other answers for great diet tips. Nutrition is so critical to any fitness regimen. Even if you don't exercise at all, a proper "eating lifestyle" (I don't like using the word 'diet') will help you stay healthy and prepared for what life throws at you (physically or mentally).
Feel free to contact me if you have other questions. Good luck! I know you can do it!

You can eat bread, and anything else. It's in the portions. If you ate a 1800 calorie a day diet, that was based on the food pyramid, and you walked 3 miles, you'd look great. If you think about it, you'd realize it's true. Your problem is very obviously that you aren't getting enough exercise.
Start going out for a brisk walk at lunch time. If you walked for 20 minutes, 5 times a week, then had a light lunches (Turkey or chicken sandwich (on wheat), an apple, and water (or diet soda), you'd still be way ahead. Find something to walk to, like getting an evening newspaper, or going to the post office, if you need motivation. If you live close enough to work, bring comfortable shoes and walk home. If you only need what you can carry, try walking to the store. If you have kids, walk to school to pick them up, then walk home. They like fresh air, and it's a opportunity to talk without the distractions of driving.
It's nice to hear a woman say she has a curvy body, and better to she still thinks she looks good 10 lbs. heavier. It's also right to be concerned over becoming overweight. Eat foods you like. Remember the fruits and vegetable you like, and eat them too :o) Find places to walk to, and get out. Walking does reduce fat, all over the body. The action of walking does work the muscles of your abdomen, pelvic floor, hips, and legs. It also improves posture and flexibility. It's the most natural exercises for the human body. It also allows us time to think, and can be great for our mental health. You could even buy a foreign language course and learned it while walking.
If you always eat a healthy, balanced diet (and that does include occasional treats), and walked, you'd never be overweight. It's the truth. If overweight people did that, they'd lose weight! If that Olsen girl did it, she'd gain weight. We're women. We're not supposed to be pencil thin. We're supposed to be rounder and softer than men, even when we're not overweight.

Time to trade the junk food in for healthy food. Snack on fresh fruit and vegetables and drink a lot of water. When I walk I "suck" my tummy in while I'm doing it.
You are burning less calories now and have to cut back on the calories you are consuming. Oh, and no pop - sugary and not good at all.
Good luck. At your age you will lose it fast with just a few changes in your diet.

You can't loose weight only on your stomach. Walking can help you loose weight all over. To have defined stomach muscles, crunches ARE great.
