I have let my hair grow out and not treated it for over six months. To allow it to recover from the damaging effects of the blonde bleaching. Now my hair is half blonde & half dark brown. I need to do something. Should I just dye it all brown to match my natural color? Should I allow it to continue to grow out, gradually trimming away the blonde?
If I dyed it brown at home how should I do it, so that all the hair turns the same color?

It's usually best to get it colored by a pro. However, if you do decide to color back to brown, make sure there is a tint of red mixed in the color, b/c if you try to just put brown color over blonde without mixing in red, you'll get a green tint, which looks way worse. If you decide to grow off your color, how about trying some cute new short haircut? That way you won't have gross roots for very long at all!

I would continue to grow it out and keep trimming the blonde out because if you dye it yourself, chances are is that the brown dye will soak up so much in your porous blonde hair, because you said it is damaged, and then you will be left with the same problem except you will have two shades of brown hair, and the bottom portion might even be black because I dyed my hair once, which was dark blonde and i used dark brown dye and I was left with raven black hair. And color remover does NOT leave your hair your natural color, it leaves it lightened so you can dye it again. You are 6 months along, so I would keep doing what you are doing, and eventually you will end up with a healthy new mane. :)

If you want your hair to be all one color, go ahead and have a professional color it back to your natural. Then, just keep getting regular trims. One application of permanent haircolor isn't going to damage your blonde ends even a fraction of what bleach can do, so don't worry that all your efforts of staying away from color are going to be ruined. However, it is somewhat of a color correction, so I highly advise not doing it yourself at home. You can't just slap a brown color all over 2 toned hair and expect it to come out all the same. Messing it up at home makes it even more difficult for a stylist to fix, and then you'd definitely have wasted the last 6 months. Good luck!

I have just been through this exact dilemma! I ended up dying mine back to dark brown and it looks great. To get the best result you need to apply a base coat of a red tinted dye - I used a Boots Warm Auburn dye. This puts the red pigments back in your hair which means when you apply the brown it will take to your hair and you'll get an even colour. Then straight after (without even drying) use a brown dye. The red looks really scary but carry on! You'll end up with beautifully conditioned and shiny hair. Good luck!

if you die it at home chances are the top where the natrual hair is will die brown but the blonde will not take the color as well and will just become dark brown leaving you with the same problem. go to a salon and have it colored to your naturl color, then get a trim every 4-6 weeks so it stays healthy. a salon will be able to mix the colors appropriately so that it is all the same color.

You should go to a beauty store and buy a color remover. It's like a hair dye, but it does the opposite. It takes the color OUT of your hair strand and you're left with your natural color. Good luck!!!

The best advice is to get it done by a professional. They know what they are doing.
I have about a 9 month growth on mine and now that summer is right around the bend I am going to go get it done professionally so there are no mix-ups.

To make sure it really looks good, let a professional take care of it. It might be more expensive than doing it at home, but having perfect hair is half of your appearance and its worth it.
