Can an X-ray taken without the protective lead sheath immmediately mean you will contract cancer?

I'm scared because I have a sore neck and throat and don't think I was protected for an X-ray I took a few months back.

I had a dental X-ray a couple of months back and I don't think I had sufficient protection. Now I have symptoms that I relayed to a friend and she knew someone with thyroid cancer with the same symptoms.

C- Change in bowel or bladder habits

A- A sore that does not heal

U- Unusual bleeding or discharge

T- Thickening or lump in breast or elsewhere

I- Indigestion or Dysphagia (difficult or painful swallowing)

O- Obvious change in wart or mole

N- Nagging cough or hoarseness


Radiation definitely is carcinogenic. You'd best get it checked out. If it turns out to be cancer, search for answers by looking outside of the medical field, in the area of alternative medicine. There are hundreds of methods to heal the body, and drugs only suppress the issue (not heal it). Most disease issues are internal because the blood carries toxins that accumulate in the body. The system needs to be cleansed (colon and liver especially), and given nutrition.

Cleansing the body is a method I've seen done many times with success and it doesn't matter how old you are. We must remove toxins. One strategy is detoxifying with herbs, water, and juice fasting. One must educate oneself.

you took the x-ray? or you had an x-ray taken?
You can't of taken it or you wouldn't be asking such a silly question.
The answer is of course not. Radiographers only were a lead coat NOT a lead body suit. Are they all dying of brain cancer?
Again the answer is no.
I have been brought in and around x-ray departments and neither am i dying of any type of weird cancer. My father is the Nuclear imaging consultant in medway and when the kids are old enough i intend to train as a radiographer my self, so trust me you probably just have a cold.

X-ray's can not penetrate lead. That's why the doctor will either leave the room or stand behind a lead sheild. They won't put it in front of you as it's you they want X-Rayed in the first place.

As for why the doctor has to stand behind the shield and you don't, X-Rays are harmless in small doses. The amount fired at you for a medical X-Ray are so small as to do no damage whatsoever. For the doctor though who would have continuous exposure to them if X-Raying patients all day with no protection, the mounts they would have to deal with are considerably higher. Rather than one small shot and then that's it, they'd have little bit after little bit after little bit which will eventually "add up" in their system.

The chances of one x ray causing harm are infinitesimal. A single lumber spine X ray is equivalent to 17 chest x-rays and dozens of dental x-rays. Cancers secondary to low level exposures, and here I mean for example people who work constantly with such materials, take 20-40 years to develop.

Both your original concern about the x-ray, and your new cancer concern, are in fact grossly hypochondriacal. I would be much more concerned that if this type of worry is becoming a feature of your life, you should seek help or counselling.

No the lead apron is to protect the staff who are subject to a lot of radiation throughout their working career.The patient cannot have a protective coat - otherwise the x-ray won't work. The small amount you were exposed to cannot harm you. I was exposed to intense radiation for 30 days straight, and suffered no ill effects at all. Don't worry you are fine.

Long-term, repeated exposure to x-rays can cause cancer. But not once or twice or even half-a-dozen exposures to the low-level they use for medical & dental imaging. So don't worry so much! But you should figure out why you are hurting and fix it.

im studying oncology (treatment of cancer) and there is MINIMAL risk of anyone no matter how predisposed to cancer in resepects of hereditary or environmental or social factors you are (thats is you smoke you live near foul fume factories or a 1st degree relative has already contracted or dies of cancer. so i really do not think you have cancer from an exposure to 1 xray.
