I was given effexor 2 weeks ago for anxiety and depression. I also believe I have sleep apnea and I see a sleep medicine doctor in 2 weeks. I have only had about 3 hours of sleep every night for the past month or so. I'm fighting another cold and I'm absoutely exhausted. I have 2 kids and a husband that does nothing to help and I work full time. I tried to stay home from work Monday just to sleep and I couldn't get to sleep. I'm getting scared that something is going to happen or I'm going to cause an accident or something. Help.

I'm not sure I can answer your question about hospitalization. People handle things differently and in different amounts. Stress for one may not be stress for another. Having said that, I really don't know what you should do, but I know I'd be feeling like I was at the end of my rope or something like that if I were in your shoes. There was a time a few years ago that I slept for like 30 mins or an hour tops for a week or two. I noticed that I became 'emotionally irrational' or something. Not to say emotions are all rational, but I was crying over the oddest things, such as a hug. Well, I had other issues besides the lack of sleep though, including anxiety and depression, and I ended up being hospitalized. It didn't help. We made collages and played jenga with questions on the jenga blocks that we had to answer. Maybe it was supposed to be therapeutic and self-explorative, but it didn't help me. Maybe that would help you, I don't know. I also don't know if you're refering to being hospitalized on a psych wing/floor or in a different department. As far as the psych wards, not all hospitals are like that. Some have classes and group and individual therapies.
I was also thinking about your doc that gave you effexor and the sleep doc. Maybe you could see one sooner? Your regular doc or psychiatrist might also be able to get you something to help the sleep problem (like Trazodone - it works great to help me get to sleep). You could call the sleep clinic and see if they had any cancellations or a waiting list for the chance that an opening comes up.
If you can't get in to see any doc soon, hospitalization might be a good idea. You could get what you need pretty quick - as quick as you can see a doc in there.
Good luck and I hope you get some good sleep soon!

Talk to your doc about the effexor, it made me not sleep when I was on it, it may be affecting you, too. Have you talked to your husband and kids about whats going on and how you feel? It may be best to be as open with them as possible so they understand what you need, they may just not understand right now.

You need to yell out now for help. Tell your doctor - tell your husband - tell your mother - someone! Let them know that you're skating on thin ice and that you're afraid that something is going to give. Sometimes people get so involved in their own probelms that they don't always notice when someone they love is in crisis. This is the time to not be strong and to ask for help - demand it!
