My 8 year old step-son , whose birthday is today, asked me what am and pm mean. I told him morning and afternoon, but I remember it was something else. We turned the clocks ahead this week so I'm trying to explain the differences in time. Any help would be appreciated.

AM is = ante meridiem (ante not anti) = ante means before, meridiem means mid-day (or noon).

PM is = post meridiem = post means after.

AM= before noon, PM= after noon.
