What was the purpose of it?
Did it violate cultural norms of the time or reinforce them?
How does this marriage reflect the current values of Muslims today, or does it?
Thank you!

As the final Prophet, his duty as a Messenger was unique in that his presentation of the religion was crystal clear and could not be ambiguous for later generations, as there would not be another prophet sent to correct the people who revert back to their old ways. In this respect, you will find further evidence that the Qur'an is unchanged since it was first revealed and free from any sort of human tampering, and in the Qur'an God promises to protect the Book from any corruption.
The Prophet taught many good things, but it was also in his nature to act upon those things as an exemplary muslim. For instance, he encouraged others to spend in charity. It's said that actions speak louder than words. Prophet gave away in charity a great portion of his wealth and belongings, and the people admired him for this and followed his lead. Similarly, in human societies there is sometimes a stigma with marrying an older woman who has children already, but the Prophet encouraged others to marry such women who are pure, wether they are of equal age, or older and have previous children or are widows. However, society is slow to adapt and many do not have the courage to do that which is still heavily viewed negatively by the people at large. By Prophet leading the example and marrying such women out of genuine love and affection, he changed the perceptions of the people who normally look down on the practice.
Similarly, the marriage to Zaynab had an element of this need to bring about change in the society's perception of what types of marriage are permissible and which are forbidden. Zaynab's marriage to Zayd (the adopted son of the Prophet) was not working out too well, and such events combined brought the Prophet and Zaynab together in marriage.
Some people have tried to misrepresent what happened in order to portray the Prophet as a bad person, but all it takes is a little sincerity and some research to uncover the truth about the beautiful character of the Prophet and how enemies of Islam have always tried to fabricate lies to further their own agendas. Usually it is insecure missionaries who are playing a numbers game thinking they are bringing salvation to people by attacking Islam which they see as a threat, not having any confidence in their own religion's teachings to stand for itself.

One's life should reflect the principles of God's Word. However, like Henry VIII, man's perception of God has been known to change according to the inderviduals needs. Amoungst ordinary folk like ourselves it's simply a matter of getting back on track with the Lord, but in the case of Historical figures one sees their actions sway whole populations with invented teachings.

This stems towards Islamic adoption. Muhammad (pbuh) had an adopted son called Zayd (may Allah be pleased with him)
Islamic adoption rules basically say that an adopted child is not your child and you must tell him/her that they are adopted and not hide thier roots etc.
So this marriage broke cultural norms who often regarded that they're adopted children and hid their roots or did not allow them to marry their daughters etc. So this marraig basically should that this is lawful.
