If you have AT&T, switch to MCI's Neighborhood Unlimited Plan.
For $50 a month, you get unlimited local, local toll and long distance, voice mail, Caller ID, Call Waiting, Call Waiting ID, Speed Dial and several other features.
You also get a free month for every year that you are with them.
You get a discount for receiving online statements instead of paper statements.
They also have plans for 200 minutes a month ($31.99) and 500 minutes a month ($40).
I switched in October and I am very happy with them. They are trying to compete with the cellular companies.

By cancelling your telephone service. If you have a high telephone bill, I recommend getting digital phone service from your cable company if they offer it. I have it through Time Warner cable and it's great.

Well there are a number of ways. If you have high speed internet you can use voip, but sometimes the quality it bad. I know of a company that will give you free long distance on your land line, and they are 10% cheaper than your local company. It is the best way to go for land line, they also have the best voip.

Take it off the table and put in on the floor? Seriously though, either change your provider (some do free calls) or make less calls. How about changing your mobile phone to allow free or cheap calls at certain times of the day?

Use someone else's phone and tell the owner that your phone has suddenly gone faulty and you need to make an urgent or emergency call to somebody.
I did this many times and my bill amount got reduced.

Check with your carrier for alternatives. You could downgrade your long distance package..get rid of stuff like call waiting etc. Or obviously don't call long distance unless it's an emergency.

You should pull out from unnecessary discussions when using your phone. Use the phone only when you really have to... for important calls. Try it, it could help.
