If you desire to paint over it the easiest way is to prime it with BIN first. You can buy it in an aerosol can. BIN is a white pigmented shellac that will stick to anything. Just lightly sand first to remove any imperfections. De glossing is not necessary. When spraying bin go light and move fast as it will run quickly. It dries in 15 minutes for re coating. I would use 2 coats in opposite directions, one coat up and down, one coat back and forth. Shake the can very well and start the spray on cardboard till it comes out white. Once dry, you can spray over it with any type finish you choose. Another option is to make a varnish glaze, this too will stick to lacquer and you can have fun dong a cool faux finish. Good luck

Unless you use lacquer again, it will be difficult to get another type of paint to stick without sanding nearly all of the lacquer off, using a good quality primer, and then a cover coat. Removing the lacquer will go faster if you can use a "paint" remover first and then sanding. Any method will work for applying the cover or top coat(s).

You will need to lightly sand it first before any painting can be done. I don't know about the spray paint but you could try it on the back first to see if it will cover. Otherwise get some good gloss paint and a roller, I think that will work best.

MT C is right. If you try painting for instance, an enamel based paint over the lauquer based paint, there will be a chemical reaction andthe new finish will "bubble' on you.I'm sorry, but there is "elbow grease" involved. Stripping it is the easist way and and really the quickest. Apply a good primer after stripping and sanding, and then go for it!!! Good luck and have fun.

You can spray it..but the key is that you clean off any grease/dirt and lightly sand it first so the new paint will adhere to the surface
