I'd go for clip in hair extensions.
they clip underneath your hair and you cannot see them
there eay to put in and take out, so you can still go swimming and etc without ruining them, just take them out
there cheap as well
and they dont damage your hair
your hair needs to be about 15cms long..

Glue will of course damage your hair, there are other methods, such as the weave (your stylist will know this)
as for the length, there really is no min length, basically, if its glued in you want it to be at least 5-6 inches long (this is to hide the joins only)
have you considered clip ins, they are woven on to small tooth clips, and lay flat and even against the scalp looking very natural, they dont damage your hair and look great, plus save a fortune as you dont need to have them redone every 6 weeks.
The problem with actuall extensions is that the wont look natural, they will clump in strands and not spread evenly unless you have micro extentions.
i am always adding a floppy fringe with clip ins, when i get home i just un clip the combs and hey presto.
i have included a very good site for your use.

Hair can be any length to get hair extensions...just depends on the style that you are going for...going for length get an extra 3" + or going for fullness and style versatility go for your length plus a little extra....Synthetic hair doesnt last that long to me....I give it two weeks tops...and as far as having it sewn in...remember that it will only last a couple of weeks...(depending on the brand that you get) so be ready to have extra hair to replace the bad ends (or bottom of the sew in) or a whole different style completely...Synthetic hair is really meant for short term styles and thats why most people bond(glue) it in...Now the black rubber glue..does damage your hair alot...but they also have another glue called Liquid Gold that has a remover and I've read that it doesnt damage your hair at all (I've only used it once..and it did just fine..no hair loss). Another option for you is to get clip ins or make clip ins yourself...This is one thing that I do and use for style options to...Also there's tape now...Protac tape...Vapon...You name...they have it now so that there is less damage..It's just that most of it is online and not in beauty stores.....Here are the websites below....the last website has everything that you need to know about liquid gold, bonding, clip ins,etc....

hiya your hair has to be long enough to not see the join between the 2 so just above the shoulder can be fine, i have clip in hair extentions, its real hair, its only slightly more expensive and it last longer than synthetic which is half real and half fake hair, it frizzes at the ends and when washed is never the same, u sew 3 clips in and then half your head of hair, clip it in, then drop the first section, there not expensive either. they look so real, every colour even highlighted ones.u can take them out whenever and clip them back in better than havin them sewn thats worse than glue!!
good luck x x x

Glue is horrible for your hair. Get it sewn in, and it doesn't matter how long your hair is.
If you want micros or something like that, your hair needs to be at least an inch long so they can grip it when braiding it. I have worn a natural for the past 11 years, and every once in a while I decide I want micros or braids, so I will let me hair grow in for a month or two so I can get them.

Yeah it does hurt ur hair, go for a sew in hair or cap it hair. They both work great. Hair glue just pulls ur hair out.
