God (or Gods depending on your belief) is the creator, and by definition known as God because of this. Now, Man is getting close to creating life, through cloning, celular maniplulation etc, does this mean that Man is becoming God. And could this be one of the reasons that there are fewer followers of all religions now?

Since the beginning of time man has tried to become God. In the Garden of Eden the serpent tempted Adam and Eve with the promise that they would become like God. The tower of Babel was another example. Man will continue to try to become god but will never succeed. And you should do some research before making a blanket statement about there being fewer followers of all religions. The fact is that most religions are experiencing a surge in converts right now and way more people in America profess to believe in God than don't.

Man is no closer to being able to actually create life.

We can play with it, but we barely understand it - the majority of people have almost no comprehension of even the most basic tenets of biology or molecular science.

Even the ones who do have the knowledge will openly admit that while we have made amazing advances in science, we only continue to show how much more there is that we don't know.

The reason people are moving away from religion is because they are realizing that it is all based on mythology, fear, and control. If there is some kind of supreme being, or creator in the universe, then it doesn't comply to any of the 'rules' that have been inferred by religions or belief systems.

Well lucky, the basic premise of your question is all wrong.

"Man is getting close to creating life, through cloning, celular maniplulation etc," That is not creation of life. That is manipulating/working with already existing life. Science has yet to create a single cell independent of already existing life.

Possibly....I believe that the reason traditional religions are losing followers is because they have not kept up with the times and are failing to adequately address the questions and problems of modern life. If a religion is truly effective in addressing and solving problems, then there should be no problem in attracting followers.

Also, the leaders of many traditional leaders have exhibited behavior that has turned off many people from even exploring those religions.

To me, a truly worthwhile religion will always be able to keep up with the scientific advance of society---It will never be in conflict with anything that humankind does.

I have been practicing Nichiren Buddhism for 27 years. One of the reasons I chose to do so is because it does not contradict science or tries to separate itself from the harsh realities of society.

God made man,
Man might be able to copy a man but they are not able to make an original, this is man trying to play God.
There are less people following religion now because they don't want to beleive that everything they do is judged or that they are being watched.

There is only one God, one maker.

Well, MAN is not going to create the Universe out of a void nor create life out of inorganics. At least not in these times.

Man is going to play around with God's work.

Man is NOT creating his own GENOME, he's going to tinker with God's genomes!

There's a difference.

And we then run into that situation, what if MAN doesn't like what he creates. What if his creation takes him on. What if the being man creates KNOWS BETTER and find's his creator to be inferor or flawed.

Great flood? Genocide? Condemnation to Hell! Thrust from Paradise. We going to drop them on Mars!

A man who thinks he is a master of his own life is less likely to believe in God. Cloning from cells is not creating life. To create life man must make cells out of nothing. The only way anyone can come to God is to acknowledge that one is a sinner who needs a Savior to redeem one from one's sins.

In my view, God gave humans free-will.
We can choose to be good or bad.
We can choose to discover, learn, grow and create.
Or, we can choose ignorance, fear, hate and destruction.

From that point of view, God gave us the intelligence to learn about life and all its intricacies.

In regards to cloning, et al, if humans choose wisely, we'll set a standard of ethics which would respect whatever life we create.

As for statistics on religious followers, I'd like to know where you got your facts.

Perfection is impossible in real terms. Humankind cannot become something which is realistically impossible.

However, science has helped uncover a consistant truth contrary to that previously believed as dictated by religious dogma... and as such, there is less and less need for religious beliefs to explain existence.

Cloning and cellular manipulation IS NOT CREATING. It is as you said MANIPULATION of what God has already created. Now if scientists were to create a living organism from nothing, ok then.
