Both answers so far are correct. I always remember it via children;
Children of siblings are 1st cousins.
Children of 1st cousins are 2st cousins.
Children of 2nd cousins are 3rd cousins.
etc.

Removed is when you go up or down generations.

Your parent's cousins are yours too, but once removed. Your father's first cousin is yours too, but once removed.
Your grandmother's first cousin is yours too, but twice removed.

has a tree diagram in four colors, if you count black and white as two of the four.

I used to work with a fellow whose 5th great grandmother was Daniel Boone's first cousin, so he was DB's first cousin seven times removed.

It is like juvsu says, but your parent's first cousin is your first cousin once removed. Likewise, your parent's second cousin would be your second cousin once removed. Your grandparents first cousin would be your first cousin twice removed, etc.

If you share a grandparent you are first cousins, if you share a great-grandparent you are second cousins and so on.
