I'm 28, and have been paying Social Security and Medicare taxes since I was 18. Does anyone think it will even be around when I'm 65?

I think I'd rather see Wallstreet or even myself handle my money. What has the government ever done right?

Believe that it will and plan like it won't.

It will. We go through the "gloom and doom" routine over Social Security every few years. The current administration would sell it out to Wall Street -- do you really want your retirement security run by the likes of another Enron? It will be fixed, and it will probably cost real $$$ to do so, but it will be around for a LONG time to come.

I think it'll be there, although in a somewhat different form. "Means testing" wouldn't be a surprise, with reduced benefits for "the wealthy" - in a sense that's already started, since higher income people pay income tax on their benefits, lower income people don't.

Good luck.

nope. I'm 29

we have to take responsibilty on a private level to insure our futures. and yes, we still have to help the old people out until we are the old people.

and no it is not fair, but we could be living through a great famine, or the Great Depression.

so this will be ours to bear.
