You have that backwards. Cats purr when they like you. But, not simply when they like you, but when they like you and they like whatever it is that you are doing. It's one of the few ways that cats have either evolved or been created to communicate. It's their way of letting each other and other creatures like us mere humans, know that it is content and that it no longer requires anybody to be finding ways to serve it, but to keep up with whatever it is that you're doing.
If your kitty indeed purrs whenever it is that you like it, then that means that it likes what you're doing whenever you 'like' it.

Cats have no control over their purring. It is just natural for them to purr when they are happy or contented. They also purr when the are nervous or scared - like when they go to the Doctor.

Something to do when they relax the palate drop down and that give a sound-like purring. then you know that they are very relax.
