I don't know that they dream, but I've always been told to talk to people in a coma, as hearing is the last sense to go. I don't even know that doctor's are certain of this, but when I've been with people who were dying, the nurses always encouraged us to talk to them, stating quite emphatically that they could hear every word we said. For that reason, we were told to keep the conversation on a positive note. My apologies for not being more helpful.

one thing to consider when thinking of a coma is that there are different levels .
hearing is said to be the last sense to go for most people who are dying.
dreams do occur for the person in a coma at least brain activity is indicating that again at the various levels of a coma a person will have different amounts of brain activity.
a person that is in a coma should be treated as a hearing person by all of the people who are within normal hearing range. certainly the idea of being in a coma and hearing what is being said but not being able to make any response to the talk could be of extreme frustration and could be a real horror. imagine being in that condition and hearing a couple of nurses say something like oh i wish this one would die in a few days he is so heavy i cant stand turning him .
the opposite is also true when kind supportive words are spoken they would then have a positive effect . Loved ones should consider a person in a coma to be a person that can hear what they say and use this as a way of helping the patient and themselves deal with such a difficult time.

Some can hear. My friend, when in a coma after a terrible car accident could hear, and we confirmed this by playing certain types of music. When we put on a CD of Gershwin, his pulse rate would increase; with other music it might decrease. As he really enjoys Gershwin, it seemed obvious that it was a reaction to the music he enjoyed. The doctors agreed with this.

So, yeah. Some can hear.
