Thats a good question loads of people do it dont they, I have to admit I do it sometimes if no ones looking its totally gross and I have no idea why, we must get a bit of satisfaction from doing it in some weird way.

If you really want to know...I do it to check for color and consistency. If you're fine it will be clear. If you're getting sick it will gradually turn from clear to yellow or green. As you get well, it turns back. Just kind of a quick indicator of how your cold is progressing. Also, if it's clear and I'm feeling stuffed up then I know it's probably an allergy rather than an oncoming cold.
