the crown goes over top of the remaining tooth structure and supports the weight of chewing forces. without a crown the remaining tooth structure is extremely weak and susceptible to fracture.

with a crown that tooth is going to last 10 to 20 years. without, it might last a year.

Root canal treatment
Sometimes a bum is considered so threatened (because of internal cracking, etc.) that future infection is considered likely or inevitable, and a pulpectomy is advisable to prevent it. But usually some inflammation and/or infection is already present, within or below the bum. To cure the infection and save the bum, it is necessary for the dentist to drill into the pulp chamber, and remove the infected pulp by scraping it out of the root canals. Once that is done, the dentist fills the cavity with an inert material and seals up the opening. This procedure is known as root canal therapy. If enough of the tooth has been damaged, or removed as a result of the treatment, a crown may be required.

I've had several root canals all are capped, I would recommend the cap (crown)

Yes,you need crown after the said tooth have had root canal treatment. Why?Because, once the tooth is root canalled,it becomes brittle, so it destroys easily. For it to be stronger,we recommend the use of crown (or if the case is worse, might need a post first before placing crown).Usually done, after 2 to 3 months after the rootcanal,to give time for tooth observation(if the Root canalled treated tooth is ok,no pain,no infection). But of course,it all depends on the patient, could be a filling or crown, provided the dentist has informed him/her of the pros and cons.

Personally, I think *yes*. I've had 3 root canals. My dentist that did 2 of them put crowns on. A different dentist did the 3rd root canal (I had moved to another city) - said I do not need a crown. I listened - wish I hadn't. The tooth is not weak (yet) - it's been 4 years - but it has yellowed, and I'm not happy with that. So I will be getting it done.

No soemtimes you only need a filling. Do go get it...I had a root canal 3 months ago and I could not get back into the dentist to get a filling because they were all booked up, so 4 weeks later my molar broke in half because I did not get it filled and now I have a bigger problem to fix....
