Depending on where you work these requirements fall in different order. I worked at a wedding hall where speed was of utmost importance, we typically had 200 people hit the bar at one time. I once mixed over 400 drinks in an hour, I lost count at 408 and kept going for about ten minutes.

1. Speed in the mixing of drinks.
2. Personality
3. Ability to remember the names of the important customers
4. knowledge of many areas for conversation
5. professionalism
6. Ability to add more quickly than a cash register
7. Good Looks
8. A good barback - a person who stocks the bar for you
9. the ability to bank your tips and not spend them foolishly.
10. TIPS certification or another certification to protect your butt legally speaking.
11. the ability to talk someone out of a drink, without causing a fight.

Personable, knowledge of how to make many drinks, friendly, quick to respond to clients.

Being a bartender means being able to serve multiple customers almost at the same time - a bartender school that can show you how to accomplish this in real time situations. These are courses where you are taught the way to mix and serve drinks to the customers at a speedy rate.

Now as we all know bartenders have the reputation for being knowledgeable about many other things besides alcoholic drinks. They are also thought of as being always cheerful. To help a new bartender with this image a bartender school will instruct you on the fine art of serving drinks for a large number of customers and having a cheerful smile and a bag full of helpful advice and jokes to lighten the atmosphere of any party or bar that you are serving in.

easy:

super easy to talk to

never lets you go too long without asking you if you need another drink

doesn't "skimp" on the liquor in mixed drinks
you don't have to explain to them a known drink (like when a bartender has to ask someone how to make a long island iced tea for example - they should know!!)

smiles a lot

it's really all about personality....but hey, it's their tip!

A good memory(the regular patrons expect you to remember what the usually drink .plus you have to remember what ingredients go into what drink) They also have to appear they care about whatever the customer is saying. It would be a positive if the bartender was quick : quick to see your glass is empty, quick to see the drunk next to you is getting obnoxious, quick to to realize you need a match,a napkin,a bowl of pretzels etc.
