Make it a requirement for the architectural drawings to list all these things

Get with your general contractor. He is the person that works with the sub-trades. As a painter, I work with both the GC and the home owner when it come s to colors, because often times people change their mind over colors after rooms are finished, due to lighting, window placements, ect. that you can't see from a blueprint! Other trades follow the specs that are laid out in the contract to build. Everthing should be spelled out with your contractor.
