My dog ate rat poison and almost died last summer. YES i took her to the vet. She had a blood transfusion bc she was 15 mins away from dead the vet told me i needed to take her to a specialist but it was an hour away and i wouldnt have time to take her. So he gave her the blood transfusion and vitamin k. then i took her to the specialist and they said she was fine. I gave her the vitamin k pills for a month. Now she is coughing alot having trouble breathing and is not as playful as she used to be she just finished clavamox and her cough suppressant but she is still doing the same thing. Could this be related to the rat poison?

Number one why in the hell would you let your pet get close enough to rat poison to eat? You should always keep a close eye on your pet that is part of being a responsible pet owner. But as far as your pet you need to take him or her to a highly recommended veterinarian. And from her on either be responsible or do not have a pet until you can be responsible.

I had a dog once that ate rat poisoning and we had to do all of the above that you mentioned. She never showed any side affects after the ordeal. This does not mean that your dog won't. I would talk to the vet again and ask. Also coughing and having a hard time breathing can be a sign of heartworm's. You may see if the vet wants to check her for that. Also, my neighbor had a dog that get heartworm's even though she was on a preventative, so sometimes that doesn't always work. Good luck and I hope she is okay.

Rat poison thins out the animal's blood. (what mine died from) vet told us it was an abcess--he was slowly bleeding to death internally from a scratch on his jugular for 2 days. they said he could have gotten into recently (he always got loose and the neighbor used it in his barn) or years ago. So yes, it COULD be related but please see the vet to be sure!

It's hard to say if it's related or not, without being examined by a vet. He's the only one who would be able to tell you for sure.

Sounds like another vet visit is in order.

It might be, or it might be something entirely different. In any case, I agree with Bookfreak: Take her back to the vet.

Good luck!
