but is it not the sender responsibility to pay for it?

Secondly if i ordered 10 phones each worth £350 retail but bought for £150 is that 17% and additional 6% charge on the retail or actual bought price?

The shipment will have to travel with a invoice. The courier company will have to make an export declaration and when the shipment arrives into the UK the courier company will also have to make a declaration to customs for clearance into the UK.

So yes you will have to pay VAT at 17.5% and you will also have to pay customs duty which i think for electronic equipment is about 6% of the value of the goods.

The courier company should contact you when the shipment arrives and advise you of the duty and vat costs. And this will need to be paid before customs will release the shipment to you.

Yes, of course. You pay Tax on EVERYTHING in UK :-)

Below is my experience ...

You can take a risk - not all parcels are stopped. Items that Customs value under £30 are usually allowed through tax free.

If the parcel is stopped by Customs the Courier service will be required to collect the Tax from you before delivering the goods.

UPS etc. usually charge about £12 - £15 to collect the Tax due.

Customs might also slap a 'handling charge' on top (typically £20).

Total Tax varies but expect to pay VAT 17.5% plus any Import duty (depends on the item).

I'll tell you this short story to help shine some light on your question:
I bought a CCTV camera from H. Kong via eBay, they said there would be "no tax / tax paid". The sender put a value much lower that it was worth. - no tax to pay - there was a declaration form attached to it.

I've also bought a PSP Jap import. The company informed me that I would have to pay Duty and tax etc on arrival - sure enough when the UPS man came I had to part with £27. again no problem. I've attached a link for you to look at.

Good luck!

the US is going via WTO policies meaning uk vehicles get taken care of like quite a few different imported vehicles. possibly it rather is unfair, however the united kingdom motor vehicle marketplace have been given an fairly undesirable rep in the process the Seventies that it rather is by no ability recovered from interior the US marketplace.
