Ok, so end of 2005 I contracted sinusitus, didn't complete course of antibiotics so doctor prescribed another dose. Completed course. Then had hayfever - couldn't breathe one bit through my nose as all hayfever sufferers will understand!

Doctor prescribed me Flixonase - some kind of weird nasal spray - and I couldn't even remember what in the world i was complaining about, my nose was fine! No runny noses, no nothing. Except, now I've run out (I went through about one or two bottles, they're not that big) and now, every morning, without fail I get a very, very itchy nose first thing in the morning, sneezing loads and a blocked nose. Then about a half hour after I get up, its fine...but the past week or two i've just had a constant blocked nose, have to blow it all the time...it's horrible! Not a cold.

I was asking people's opinion on what it could be. Read between the lines.

I would say that it is allergies. Have you been tested for allergies to mold, perfumes and house dust?
Are you fine first thing? What are you running into at home that aggravates this?

You have ALLERGIES.

You have to be careful with those cortisone nose sprays. They are not meant to be taken every day and they will make you WORSE in the end if you DO use them every day.

There's also Flonase and Nasacort, and Flixonase sounds like it's in the same family of sprays as all of these. They have cortisone in them and you have to be careful using that. If you use it too much it will actually STUFF UP your nose and make it worse.

You should make your own home-made saline solution and use this a couple of times a day. 1/4 tspn of salt to half about quarter litre of water (one large glass).

Inhale that up your nose (put in a spray bottle like your empty nose spray bottle if you can) and just inhale it into your nostrils. That will disinfect and de-flame your nose. Do this daily up to 3 times a day. Use your cortisone sprays only when you are really bad off for a few days, then stop them.

You have to find out what you are allergic to and AVOID it. That is the only way you will get better. Maybe you should get shots for whatever you are allergic to if it's that bad. Be careful if you do the steam mentioned above, take the pot off the burner otherwise steam can be so hot it can damage your nostrils. Some people put eucalyptis oil in it. You can put a drop of that oil just under your nose and it might help. It's pretty potent smelling stuff (kind of like Vicks rub). Claritan, etc. might help during allergy time with the stuffed nose, runny eyes but again it's only meant for short term use too.

I'll post what I put up as an answer to someone else below and I hope that helps you too. Remember, avoidance of what triggers your allergies is really the best medicine. If it's outside stuff keep your WINDOWS closed during allergy season or you just let the pollens into your house. Watch out for mold too--a lot of people allergic to that.

Here's my other post:

You probably have Rhinitis. There are sprays for that in the store to keep your nostrils moist if they are dry.

Also, if you have allergies (seasonal, environmental, etc.) you'll forever have an itchy nose. What you have to do is to learn to control your allergies by avoiding the allergens (ie if it's dust keep your bedroom totally dust-free--no carpets rugs, stuffed animals, etc., stuff that traps dust) and cover your mattress/pillow with appropriate hypoallergenic covers.

If it's seasonal, ie tree pollen in Spring, grass in Summer, or ragweed in Fall, then you just have to avoid that as much as possible. It's worst in the morning and evening, so try not to go jogging through a park at the crack of dawn type of thing, or you can take Claritan or other anti-histamines (your body overproduces histamines when you have allergies--it thinks it's under attack by these harmless invaders, your immune system over-produces histamines as a result.)

So those are some things you can do. Try the Rhinitis spray though, use it at night. You can also ask your doctor if they will prescribe Nasacort which has cortisone in it if you are always stuffed up too. Caution in overusing that though...use only when you're really in unbearable shape as it's not meant for every day.

1- Steam inhalation (very important) especially in the morning
2- Rest: as much as you can, especially at the early stages.
3- Don't blow your nose, cleaning your sinus, especially in the morning ,by sneezing warm water through your nose. This might be uncomfortable for beginners but by time you will get use to it.
4- Tea bags, place warm tea bag on your sinus and eyes.
5- Herbal tea is always good.

Don't use any antibiotics, they do more harm than good. If you practiced my methods, your body will be more able to fight sinus congestion on its own. Keep the faith!
