Most students will take a hit points wise if there is something more interesting going on elsewhere.

But if the class is interesting and enjoyable, they will come to get the points and learn something new.

First, spell being correctly. Then make them want to be there. Show them the outcome of a good education, make the learning interesting, and most of all make them part of the learning process. Engage them and engergize them by making them participate. Let them express themselves in a non threatening enviroment. Lastly, try to make it fun to learn. There is nothing more boring than listening to someone who never injects humor and interaction into the program.

give them a rewards scheme such as give them 1 point for each half day they attend and add them up for individual pupils as well as classes as a whole (if the school is big enough).
use these points to keep a best and worst leaderboard and give prizes to the best pupils. hopefull they will want to be at the top and it might shame the pupils on the poor rating list to try harder
