My son has been learning about ancient Roman History for about 2 years now. Last year, unofficially and on his own time; this year as part of our homeschool curriculum. He has learned so many aspects: gladiators, fighting strategies, daily life, technology, etc. and I'd love to figure out some kind of project for him to showcase some of his knowledge. He hates writing, so I'm not going to have him do any kind of long paper. Any ideas? That wouldn't cost a ton for materials? Oh, he's 6th grade, but he's completed books through the 12th grade level. Just in this subject though, because it's his favorite ;-)

I appreciate the suggestions for additional study, but I'm not looking for anything new this year...next year's history will be a whole new subject. Just looking, now, for a way to have a final culmination of this year's learning. Like a school final...but more fun.

He could build a gladiator scene....big box, plastic horses, play-do people. Should be pretty inexpensive.

Maybe the pros and cons of building Hadrian's wall in Northern England? When I visited it the museum said that Hadrian built it to keep the army busy and away from Rome so they couldn't hold a military coup. So maybe he could make an argument over whether that diversion was worth the huge cost. He might even be able to compare it to some current day pork barrel projects.
Just an idea.

Hmm maybe the political life of rome? i mean that might be a little bit much even for the genius kid he sounds like some kind of intro to the class divisions of ancient rome? like how the patricians lived in opulence compared to how the plebians worked?
or perhaps he could read some of the ancient roman stores - basically the stuff that was ancient history to the romans of Caeser's day about the founding of rome? they are quite whimsical sometimes and would be fun for a little boy because its all about battles and heroes, and such.

It's great that you and your son are so into the Roman culture and tradition, maybe you should introduce him to the current trends in the world. (no, it's not ok for people to duel it out like Roman Gladiators, they would get shot now.)
Maybe experience him into the current businesses and lifestyles of what Italians deal with now and since the Roman Empire has fallen for......I'm guessing here.....hundreds of years, you could teach him that capitalism in Italy and Europe and the rest of the world has gone to the best market.
Not sure about my teachings here, but your should get the best of the current trends, as well as traditions, as your son will be earning his life in that real world someday....

You DO know that the Spanish were in the Southwest about 100 YEARS before the English and French arrived on the East Coast... I hope. Do your project on some of the early Spanish Explorers... Cortez; De Soto; or that REALLY interesting character, De Baca. There is a ton of information about the SPANISH in the Southwest... and the earliest European settlement was San Gabriel in what is now New Mexico... it was 50 YEARS before Jamestown and all that East Coast stuff.

He could tell the story of a gladiator by what he wears, where he lives, and how he gains his freedom.

heck I don't know. my first reaction was how would he do his normal everyday stuff if he was living back then. but I reread your question. could he live a day as a roman? only having access to things they would've had? let him constuct a catapult. not too complicated, looks cool working. you don't have a cat?
