Ravan was totally disarmed by the rains of arrows of Lord Rama. He lost his chariot also and was standing alone aghast against Sri Ram.

Rama is embodiment of courage and sathya. It is not becoming of a good warrior to kill one who has lost all his arms in a battlefield. That is why he threw a shame on Ravan by allowing him to retreat and return the next day, simultaneously providing him an opportunity to rethink on the sin he had committed and to correct himself. Sri Rama thus exhibited that to forgive is the best of virtues., though ultimately Ravan returned the subsequent day driven by his ego and fell dead at the hands of Sri Ram.
