Balloons are relatively inexpensive. Buy 40 balloons and attach a note card to each and let the balloons hang from the ceiling. Each note card can have something you love/like about that person, or a rememberence of a good time shared, or something you look forward to with that person in the future.

Or you can still take the notecard idea, only hide them in different places to be found throughout the day. i.e.-wallet, pocket, desk, under their breakfast, lunch or dinner plate, etc.

If you want to invite friends & other family, have a potluck 40th birthday dinner party and have others bring their favorite casserole or dish. Can you afford hamburgers & hot dogs or cold cuts? If you can provide the meat & tea or soft drinks, ask everyone to bring their favorite side dish. You can either make the decorations or buy them cheap at some place like Walmart - they don't have to be lavish or anything. It doesn't have to be expensive to throw a party for someone. I guarantee you that Bev will remember all the family, friends, and fun rather than how much was spent on it.

Suprise party & potluck! Decorate a homemade birthday cake with a tube of icing. You could also get your daughter or one of your partners best friends to help you plan and make a guestlist and hand out computer-made invitations. Burn a CD with some of her favorite songs, and borrow someone's digital camera to take pictures. You can also borrow tables and chairs from people. Offer to serve the main dish (fried chicken from the supermarket?) and let the guests bring the rest as a potluck..... or you can set all of this up at a local park (would be good if people are bringing their kids) for free. Sometimes the parks have grills, so you could perhaps have a BBQ suprise party & potluck.

Good luck, if you're planning this far in advance, i'm sure it will be lovely.

Might be time to stop spending so much money on the kids that you dont leave any for yourselves....seriously, we faced the same thing. It was time to make our relationship a priority again....thats the best gift you can give. Dinner and a hotel doesn't have to cost a lot of money....if you watch for off peak bargains or mid-week bargains for the hotel. Dinner can range from a picnic to the extravagant. Romantic gestures like flowers and love letters never get old. What does she want to do ? You are in luck...if she wants a party, get her girlfriends involved to help plan/cook...we love to do this sort of thing for each other....and you get most of the credit.... ask her. Does she want a public celebration or a private night with you.....

Find the astrological society that will name a star after someone. I don't know where they are on the internet but I'm sure you can find them. I'm not sure how much they charge but they do let you know just exactly where the star is and on her birthday you can take her out in the evening and point out the star for her. Then let her know a piece of the heavens is named after Bev.

Throw her a surprise party......have everyone go in with a few dollars for the cake, or make it yourself to save money...if you drink, make it BYOB...and put out snack/finger foods, dips and chips....make a mixed CD of her fav. songs and play it in the background....get some cute/funny pics of her when she was a kid to put around....and places like party's plus has decorations sometimes for like $5 or less....you could just get one of those signs that goes across the room that says Happy Birthday and maybe some confetti for probably around a couple of bucks so everyone can throw it up when she comes in...turn out the lights and stream white Christmas lights around.....give a big toast to her during the party and have each person go around and say something about her...good luck! and I am sure whatever you do for her will be awesome...sounds like you are thoughtful like that anyway.

Do you have a Dollar Tree or something like that in your area? I'm a total cheapo, lol*, and it's my favorite place to get party supplies and things...you could throw a small get together of all her favorite close friends and family at your place or a restraunt. Also - I don't know about your partner, but my favorite things are always handmade. You could pick up a scrapbook, also available at the dollar store!, lol*, and take your favorite pictures of you and she together, and sort of make a pictorial timeline of your relationship...it's sappy but who doesn't love super mushy romantic gifts!?! Lol*

Make a scrapbook with 40 pages and 40 photos. On each page write something wonderful about her pertaining to the photo. It will provide years of memories.

A birthday to remember doesn't mean it has to cost you a great deal of money. If she loves you, any little thing will mean a lot. Take her to somewhere you haven't before, get the band to serenade her, tell her how much you love her and then take her home and show her, probably in the dining room, if you get my drift.

Book a bus ticket (cheapest way to travel) to somewhere beautiful for a day trip. Its the thought that counts more than anything else.
